Disappearing Nine Patch Block Drive

How about a nice bold block for August's block drive?  Every month quilt bloggers give Covered in Love a boost through our block drives.  Make a block or two or ten to help us bring comfort quilts to families who have lost loved ones.  This month we're doing a disappearing 9 patch.

Pull black and white fabrics and one accent fabrics per block.  Try to go for true, crisp black and whites, not fabrics with a bunch of grey.  Accent colors are lime green, Caribbean blue, and bright yellow.  I pulled some examples to show you. My lime doesn't look very lime-y, but you get the idea.

Cut (8) 5.5" squares from the black and white fabrics and one from the accent fabric and arrange into a 9 patch with the accent square in the center.

Sew together into a 9 patch.

Subcut the 9 patch in half vertically and horizontally by measuring 2.5" in on the center patch.

Arrange as shown and sew back together.  Blocks should finish at 15" sq.

(Edited to Add: View some finished quilts here)

Thank you to everyone who sews along and sends in blocks every month.  If you would like to support us by sewing some blocks this month, please do!  You can email me at CoveredinLoveTx@gmail.com or leave a comment here for a mailing address.

  1. Perfect timing! I was hoping you'd post the new block early so I can get started. I'd like to send my last July star block with some new August 9 patches. I also just got a batch of black and white fabrics from eBay...my stash was completely missing this critical color combo :)

The baby gifts in your last post are just darling! What a good idea to spiff up some plain onesies with patches like that. So cute!

  2. This looks like a fun one. I should have time next week to make some of these. I bet the resulting quilts will be stunning. I love black prints with a bold accent color.

  3. I've never made one of these, but have wanted to. Things have slowed down finally, so I think I see some blocks with your name on them :)

  6. Yes! Please send me an address to mail my blocks. I would be honored to participate. During her last days, my mother had a special quilt we bought from Target. (This was before I began sewing.) My husband still uses that quilt when he needs a hug from his mama. Thank you for this opportunity!
