The First of Many

The first 5 of the Jan/Feb string block quilts are done!  Not only are there going to be more quilts from this drive, but I think they are going to look better than ever.

by Nancy and Jenn

Nancy K. volunteered to assembled a couple of batches of block for me and her friend Jenn did lovely quilting!  The quilt above got loops and the one below got a pretty lily flower motif.  I really love how Nancy changed up the design with the sashing.

Tammy S. also volunteered to put together a stack of blocks and quilt them.  I really like the design she made with these scattered diamonds.

Katie G. sent in this top already pieced and a local quilter, Angie C., volunteered to do some quilting for CiL. She just got a new machine and wants to practice. It's a win-win!

Finally, this top was pieced and quilted by me.  The blocks are sets made by 4 or 5 people that just came together really well so maybe you can spot some of yours.  I quilted it with a quick stipple and bound it with scraps.

Backings for these quilts came from Sandra, Amanda, Katie, Nancy, and Gail.  Thank you for all your help! In the coming months there will be 30+ of these quilts getting finished.

I've decided to post them in batches of 5 and take them up to the hospital once I get 10.  Chaplain Perry says these are his personal favorites and always well received by patients and families.  I can't wait to get more done :)

Covered in Love is taking a break from the block drives for the next 2 months so I can catch up, but don't go anywhere! I still need your blocks. Check out details HERE.

  1. Kat, these are great as always. I LOVE that bright yellow one so much. Yes, I spot a few of my blocks, which is always fun. You did an amazing job pulling those colors together into a sunrise colorwash. This may be my favorite of the many string quilt you have shown!! Isn't a sunrise/sunset the perfect metaphor for a family experiencing grief!? While I'm selfishly sad that you're taking a break from block requests, it makes so much sense to catch up on all the quilty love you already have piled up!! If these string quilts are any indication, you're on a roll!!!

  2. What gorgeous string quilts! Thanks to Nancy, Jenn, Katie, Angie, Tammy, Sandra, Amanda & Gail for their help to you in getting these quilts to the finish line. And thanks to all the quilters who participated in the string block drive in making such great looking blocks. I think my favorite is the sunny yellow quilt. If Chaplain Perry's favorites are string block quilts, these are going to (quote) "bless his socks off" (unquote). :)

  4. Look at this riot of color and pattern! All from skinny little pieces of left over fabric from around the world. Amazing. So beautiful and creative and cooperative!

  5. Oh, and when I showed that last golden quilt to Sean, he said, "That one should be hanging in a museum!" High praise from my guy :)

  7. It always amazes me how all these blocks come together, no matter what fabrics, no matter who made them. It's just so satisfying! I will be sending blocks to Briawana. It's a bit of a challenging block, but they are coming together!
