UFOs No More (continued)

Happy weekend, once again! I'm bringing you the second half of the batch of quilts Louise sent back to me recently.  This pretty Flying Geese quilt is the second (first here) to come from a partly done quilt kit that was sent to us by Gail.  

Louise came up with a new design for the blocks that turned them into 2 quilts smaller than the original quilt and perfect for CiL. 

Next, this quilt came from another kit. This one was kind of an unusual "Lego-style" with various different sizes and shapes of fabric that all fit together easily.  Louise chose simple is best and made a top with simple squares in four patches.

She quilted it with a cool design of overlapping large circles. 

This pretty spring-y green quilt featured lots and lots of plaids.  

Lastly, this quilt that used a lot of assorted leftover blocks and set them off with fancy quilting.  

As soon as I began unpacking the quilts Sundae jumped straight into quality testing!

UFOs No More

Welcome to the weekend quilters! Friday is my teaching day at the nursing school, it's a great day to end the week.  This week I'm teaching a bunch of 19-year-olds how to given hypodermic injections to hot dogs and oranges so that in just a couple years they can be grown up nurses! I'm crossing my fingers no one cuts themselves this semester ;) Hey, at least I'm not teaching it over Zoom anymore! 

Louise has just shipped back a great big box of finished quilts she made from the UFOs and orphans I sent to her.  I loves this first one with the beautiful Fall colors and this poppy backing. So gorgeous!!

 

This quilt is made from some of the same fabric with a design you might recognize. It was a popular Quarantine Quilt Along  by GE Designs that a lot of people participated in. 

You know it's not often that I can share stories with you of where our quilts go.  This particular quilt, however, I got to help pass on its way to the mother of a woman with COVID. The young woman had to be moved closer to the DFW area due to the intensity of the care she needed and has been there struggling with the complications of this disease for about 2 months.  On top of the distance from home, of course visiting restrictions make it hard for her mother to see her. As she continues to fight for her life we hope this quilt will be a comfort. 

 

The vibrant reds and bold patterns in this quilt were an perfect match for mother and daughter's bright personalities and the young woman's mom sends her love and thanks to all of you who made it possible.

 

This quilt is a design many of you should definitely recognize! Leftover flower blocks from last year's Spring block drive.

Last quilt, for this week, is this neat scrappy one.  Louise used geisha panels and stacked scraps along with a batik background fabric that looks like bamboo.

The quilt doesn't have batting and has a luscious plush mauve backing.  It's definitely unusual, but I'm sure it will find it's way to the perfect person!

Spinning Pinwheels

Hey everybody, I hope your Labor Day was relaxing and you had a good week. I've got some bright and sunny quilts to show off! The first ones from the March-April block drive. 

 

These were pieced together and quilted by some of CiL's wonderful helpers! The first 3 were done by Beryl in UT.  She likes to use this wavy line quilting that I really like the look of.

 

Yellow and blue is my mom's favorite color scheme and I love how spring-y and bring these quilts look! They're some warm and happy looking. 

 

These next 2 were pieced and quilted by Tammy S. from Kansas who has been helping finish CiL quilts since 2018.  This time she chose a flower panto that worked just perfect!

 

We've passed 20 quilts in long-term storage here, which means it's time for another delivery to the hospital soon. I work next week by maybe Chaplain Perry and I can arrange a breakfast meeting.

 

Things have been rough in the world lately, with politics heating up toward the election and Covid conspiracy theories seeming to be more common and more tolerated.  As a healthcare worker I can tell you that what is most wearing is not the daily work or the ill patients, it's the attitudes of people on Facebook proclaiming masks are more dangerous than the virus.  It's people in Walmart and church, that's what gets exhausting and disheartening.

 

I hadn't been away from my hometown since January, so I got a few days away this week to a quiet lake with a friend.  Took some time to read and get away from social media and refocus.  I hope you can find some time for yourself to do something similar this week.

 

Spotted this strange sight in town last week, an adolescent fox scratching himself on the church lawn! I'm told there are a handful of them living in town who are semi-habituated to being around cars and people.

Sept/Oct Covered in Love Block Drive

Hello quilters! We made it to September, school is starting back, and the new normal or the next normal or whatever we're call this is starting to feel a little bit more, well, normal.  

Scrap quilt step 1: Organization (throw back photo to Rory)

 

For the Covered in Love block drive for the months of September and October we are following a tutorial on someone else's site with a few important changes listed below.  

The block is here on Zippy Quilts; it's called Fiddlesticks!  

• our blocks will be bigger, so cut your colored squares to 14" and a trim your final blocks to 12.5"
• make your scrappy strip sets between approx. 1" to 2.5" wide
• each block should have at least 3 inset strips, but can have more
• for your background colors try to stick to solids or textured solids and within the normal spectrum (no neons, etc)

Caveat: It was pointed out to me (thank you Linda!) that this pattern bears a strong resemblance to Crazy Mom Quilt's Bright Birches pattern she wrote in 2012. I don't think that Zippy Quilts intended to copy her pattern, obviously more than one person can have the same idea independently at different times.  We aren't selling these quilts but are instead donating them. That all being said, if you want to support the most original pattern designer (that we know of) please do buy a copy of Amanda Jean Nyberg's pattern.

Covered in Love makes quilts to cover patients who pass away at a Texas hospital and comfort the families.  Anyone can contribute to these drives and make as few blocks or as many as they like. The current drive runs September through October, so blocks should be in the mail by the end of October.  Email CoveredinLoveTx@gmail.com if you need the address to mail blocks.
