Happy Sewing

Today was a day for some fun sewing projects.  First up I made a batch of fabric bowl-cozies.  Have you seen these? It's to keep your hot bowl from burning your hands if you microwave soup or something. I used this tutorial.

Several of my friends and family have expressed an interest in these so I figured I better get busy :) A good excuse to use some stash and some leftover batting scraps.

I didn't really count as I was cutting fabrics and batting, just used up what I had. I ended up making 10 bowl-cozies.  I found some really fun kitchen-themed fabrics in my stash.

These are reversible and washable and make a great quick gift. I would definitely recommend it if you haven't ever tried to make them before!

Next up I cut into my green scraps for this month's Rainbow Scrap Challenge

I'm almost done with my purples and blues from earlier in the year. I'm thinking that with the greens I may have enough to finish my first RSC quilt of the year!

Back to your regularly scheduled quilting blog

Thank you to everybody who left nice comments on my last post, I really appreciated it. I've enjoyed this weekend being back home and getting back to my sewing machine.

Being gone for a little over two weeks, there was a mountain of mail waiting for me at home. (My mail gets taken in while I'm gone so no CiL stuff is sitting outside, don't worry!)  You guys are obviously enjoying making these string blocks (either that or you're just really motivated by the chance at a jelly roll).  Once I inventoried all my mail I got another 350 or so blocks toward the Jan/Feb block drive

I had to do some maintenance sewing first, assembling batting scraps and backings, then rewarded myself by sewing up February's RSC blocks in purple.  In a move that surprises no one, after completing the planned 6 blocks I decided to just keep going through the rest of my purple scraps ;)  Expect to see MANY more of these soon!

Ringing in 2018

Happy New Year! I got the new year organizing bug and decided to take control of my overflowing strings box.

All the strings in this box are less than 2.5" wide.  I have been trimming any strings larger than that into scrappy binding strips for a couple of years now, and I pretty much stay caught up with that.   It took me a long time to decide to buy an AccuQuilt Go, but I have to say it is completely worth it for this sort of thing.

All the strips have been pressed and cut to 1.5" widths.  The first thing I'm going to sew with these is more of the string herringbone blocks you can see here.

Inspector Rey confirmed the box was empty.  My next New Year project was the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Every December I look jealously at the beautiful rainbow quilts being finished, so I finally decided to take the plunge.

I'm sewing Buckeye Beauty blocks, 6 per month at 8" each, on a grey background.  Inspired (well, copied) from this beauty at Treadlestitches.  We'll see how it goes... I have a problem with these kind of slow quilt alongs, the same problem I have with leader-enders. I'm bad at waiting.  At some point, usually before very long, I get excited and just make the rest of the blocks and finish!
