Bright Happy Quilts from Louise

Louise sent me this batch of orphan block quilts a while back and they've been waiting their turn for a photo shoot.  The blocks that started this quilt came from Cathy and Louise added some. 

Some of the blocks appear to be from the book Farmhouse Vintage. I love the embroidered details on the mixer and the bee.

These wonky stars and the fish panels came from several people, but I think Christine may have sent in some of it.  Please claim your blocks if you see them!  I think this one is my favorite quilt in this batch.

Louise put this quilt together from a jelly roll that Christine sent, with a simple rail fence in a rainbow layout.

Christy M sent in this top made by a friend of hers. Louise described it as, "a very complicated design, with most of the blocks being cut on the bias. Blocks that had NO BUSINESS being bias. Maybe it was a mystery quilt along and each piece was so unusual there would be no way to guess the final design? I don't know, but I feel for the gal who tried to make this beast lie flat. The combination of so many bias edges and the super soft plaid flannel made the top wavy gravy. Roly poly. A sea of rumples."

Louise tackled the project with gusto and did some ripping, re-sewing, bordering, and aggressive quilting.  It's beautiful and you'd never know it had issues!

Jan O. sent in a bunch of leftover bits and blocks that Louise sashed up and set in a quadrant design. I think this one is my second favorite ;)

Priscilla sent in this batch of scrappy blocks that were quick to assemble into a homey quilt.  Thanks to Louise and all the ladies! Louise has retired from blogging now, as it had become more of a chore than fun, but she's still quilting. She promises to send me her commentary along with future quilts so I can continue to share her insights with you.  I love to know how she thought about approaching each set of orphans!

Baby Hugs for Jack's Basket

Some happy little quilts this week! Christine B. sent in several tops with backing a while back for Jack's Basket along with a donation for CiL.

For anyone who hasn't heard of them, Jack's Basket is a charity that gives "Welcome" baskets with fun stuff and educational materials, and support resources to families that have a new baby with Down Syndrome.  

Jack's Basket is one of my favorite charities that to give to when we have extra materials or things that don't work well for CiL.

I follow Jack's Basket on Instagram where they post pictures of cute babies with their baskets and I have spotted quilts we sent in several times!

The first 4 quilts came from Christine, these last 2 came from Frances B. I love how bright they both are.

Speaking of "bright". I saw a meme this week about how all the orange cats in the world share a single brain cell that they have to pass around. Obviously Fudge doesn't get his turn very often ;)

Cool Colors, Hot Summer

It's still hot here, just barely starting to cool down. It's a real tease, feeling the whiff of cool air in the early morning before it heats up for the day!  I have two quilts this week in a cool color palette.  This first one is a do. Good Stitches NURTURE circle quilt from a few years ago.  

Everyone made about (8) 1" wide strips joined into a panel and these were joined into the quilt top by Briawna. Ultimately life happened and the top didn't get quilted, so Pam was kind enough to finish that step.  This would be a great use of scrap strings; 1.5" is one of the sizes I cut my leftover strings to, which is what this is made with.  But I think it would be a real bear to tackle as an individual instead of a group!

This quilt came from the Sunshine Guild, who have started to support CiL.  The top was made by Peggy, quilted by Beth, and bound and mailed by Carol.  Thank you ladies, it's lovely!

I've got my annual tie-dye bug again.  I made these shirts for the sons of a friend of mine.

Rounding up the Strays

Happy weekend friends, I hope everyone is doing well! I had a very relaxing 2 weeks off and now I'm back to the hospital grind. School has started again and I have a new group of anxious future nurses to warp *ahem* I mean teach.

Pam recently took on my stash of leftover string blocks from the past 5 years of January drives.  This quilt is made of the 12.5" blocks. There are several different designs, but they still go together really well.

These leftover string blocks from a pre-2019 string block drive were assembled and quilted by Pam too. Many of these blocks came from Karen M and Christy G. Thank you Pam! Clearing out these lingering old blocks is so satisfying.

Priscilla sent in this HUGE top a while back with really scrappy blocks based on the 2019 Fall split nine block drive.  This top measures something like 100"+ x 90", so I took the opportunity of have it quilted by Denise and Kay. The ladies recently acquired a long arm and needed some quilts to learn on before taking customer quilts. They did a great job!

This is the memorial at my work for our hospital employees lost of Covid. Unfortunately it will probably continue to grow.  Hug you loved ones close and get vaccinated! You might save your own life or someone else's.

More Fiddlesticks Quilts

Welcome back to the rainbow forest! That's what I think when I see the quilt above. These are Fiddlesticks quilts 6-12 from last Fall's block drive. 

The first 2 quilts were pieced and quilted by Pam. She has a great knack for color coordinating the blocks. 

These next four quilts were quilted by Linda. Two were pieced by Pam and two by Linda.  

I would not have made it through the past year without these two ladies and others who have taken on quilting duties to help with the block drives!
