Quilters Support for Uvalde

Hello quilters, I know many of you want to support the people of Uvalde as they mourn the loss of many young lives in the wake of another mass shooting.  Uvalde is in Texas, where Covered in Love is based, but quite far away as Texas is such a large state. There are two main organizations heading up efforts for comfort quilts that I want to give you information about.

Uvalde's local quilt group, Quilts of Grace, will be providing comfort quilts for the immediate families as well as Uvalde children and teens affected by the tragedy. Diana Bonnet, is a retired teacher who used to teach at the targeted elementary school, and a quilter. She is already deeply embedded in the town and local quilting community and is coordinating one of the major efforts to distribute comfort quilts.

eQuilter is in contact with her and helping to manage donations so that she doesn't become over run.  You can follow their page for more info/updates.

In times of tragedy like this towns can quickly become overwhelmed with material donations when money to purchase specific items or cover large expenses is very needed.  If you don't have quilts on hand, please consider sending a monetary donation via this fund at a local bank

Send finished quilts for kids or adults:

Mail via US Postal Service only, to her PO box:

PO Box 2040
Uvalde, TX 78802

Mail via UPS/FedEx only to:

Secondly, Project Linus of Wilson county (adjacent to Uvalde) is providing blankets to each student in the Uvalde district and gathering 800 adult-size quilts for the teachers in the Uvalde district to receive on the first day of school in August.   With the help of quilters from around the country that need has been  -or very nearly been- met. PL and the local guild are coordinating so they can cover different populations and may share resources.

One of the Project Linus coordinators reached out to ask if CiL could help support this effort. After some discussion it sounds like the greatest need we can fulfill is actually with the void that will be left with Project Linus after focusing so much of their efforts of Uvalde.  Project Linus is not established in Uvalde county, hopefully soon, but operates in two adjacent counties to provide comfort quilt to children in foster care for the surrounding area. They especially need quilts for teenage boys.

SO, I thought we could donate our summer block drive to them and it will be fun to make quilts specifically for teens for once. That block drive runs July/August, but I will be announcing it early and when I do I'll post the block here.  As usual, email me for the address to send. They are going directly to south Texas so you'll all need to email me for the address, CoveredinLoveTx@gmail.com
