Quilter Practice

Happy weekend! It's nice and cool here and I have some great big cozy quilts. You may recall that a little while ago I had a large split nine quilt from Priscilla that was finished off by Denies and Kay. Denies & Kay recently purchased a long arm and volunteered to finish some CiL quilts as they learn their new machine. It's a mutually beneficial exchange!

 

Priscilla also made this large (61"x81") patriotic quilt which Denise and Kay quilted with Baptist fans. I really like this simple design with the strings and the HSTs in the corner. I've thought about it for a CiL drive before.

Amy A. sent in this blue and green nine patch that Denise and Kay quilted with a swirly motif.  They also provided backing fabric for several of the quilts and I really like this rainbow one. 

Donna sent in this beautiful and huge (67x90") blue zigzag quilt.

This one got my favorite quilting of all, rippling water lines.

Strings Progress...

In case you missed the post earlier this week, CiL is now affiliated with another charity who will help us with discounted shipping!  Check out the details here and never pay more than $15 to ship to us again!

String quilts 13-15 are ready for their debut! I have put together all of these and really enjoyed working with all the different color combinations and blocks.  I really like this yellow/brown/red color fade, even though I did sort of lose the plot on that upper right corner. 

Blue and brown, always a classic combination. These are from the Jan/Feb string block drive. To see a tutorial of how I put them together there's a post here. 

These pretty pink/yellow/green/blue blocks went together really well and I used some of my leftover pink and blue dyed binding to finish it.  

Lastly, this black and red quilt had a dye-bleeding catastrophe in the wash from some of the red backings. It was far more than a color catcher or three could handle. After soaking in Dawn, washing in Syntrapol, etc. I think I revived it. Fortunately since the squares are black and red neither one shows some pink too noticeably.

Hello, fellow supporters of Covered in Love! Louise here with some great news. I'm happy to announce that CiL has partnered with Give Back Box to help reduce your shipping costs. Give Back Box supports many charities by selling UPS shipping labels for $15. You can fill a single box with up to 70 pounds of donations and ship that box to Kat in Texas. Yes, you read that right: only $15 to ship up to the weight of a standard Poodle to Kat from anywhere in the county.* That's less than a large flat rate USPS Priority Mail box! This service is no-strings attached for Covered in Love, requiring NO extra work for Kat, so it is a win-win all around.

Here's how it works: Visit the Covered in Love page on Give Back Box. Click "Add to Cart" and follow the prompts to buy a label. Choose how you want to pay, with a credit card, PayPal, etc. A link will appear to download a Covered in Love Shipping Label in pdf format. You will also receive a confirmation email with a link to the same pdf. Print that pdf file on your printer. 

One thing you'll notice about the label: the return address is not your own address. It is the address of Give Back Box headquarters in Wadley, AL. Do not fret! If something goes wrong with the shipment, it will end up at Give Back Box and they will figure out what to do with it using the UPS tracking number. They know that a given tracking number belongs to Covered in Love and will make it right. You don't need to worry about your quilts being returned to you while you're on vacation, with the box sitting on your driveway in the rain.

Now take a nice big cardboard box. Bonus points for re-using a box and helping the environment! Fill that box with all the donations you'd like to send to Kat. Up to 70 lbs! PLEASE include a note inside the box with your name and address so Kat knows it is from you. I recommend that you print TWO copies of the label and write your info on the second copy and tuck it inside the box. Tape one of the labels onto the outside of the box, and take the box to your local UPS drop off. Or if the UPS truck comes to your house, you can hand the box directly to the driver.

Fiddlesticks Wrap Up

November and a new blocks drive, how time flies! There aren't many things that I find more satisfying than wrapping up a block drive. 

We've just finished off the last of the quilts from last Sept/Oct's Fiddlesticks drive. These first 4 were assembled by Pam and quilted by Linda. 

The quilting design above with the zig-zag circles is one of my favorites. And I love the color layout on the quilt below. Especially from a distance, it looks awesome.

Sort of feathered shell quilting on this one. 

Another really pretty design with pastels on a diagonal. 

Little flowers in the quilting and a scrappy pink binding.

This top came from Edna. I has a cool textured blue background. I found a nice multicolor backing and quilted it with a stipple. 

This top came from Beth T, also with textured blues.  The backing for it was a flannel so it was a bit of a pain to quilt but it's extra cuddly. 

Lastly, this top with some beautiful batiks came from Holly L on a textured yellow fabric (love those textured backgrounds!)

All together the Fiddlesticks drive made 19 beautiful and unique quilts!
