Hearts from Erin

Another week, and a few more finishes from the UFO drawer! These two tops came from Erin (thanks Erin!) There were 5 tops total, so the others will be done soon.

I love these pretty appliqued scrap hearts. I would never be patient enough to hand sew all of these! I'm so glad someone is and willing to share their talents with Covered in Love.

These strings with the black background remind me of Amish style quilts. I quilted it with navy thread.  Erin sent along the tops, backing, and binding for her quilts, big thanks!

The Quilt Inspectors were 1 year old last week.  Here they were one year ago, as of Saturday the 28th, all snuggled in their box with their siblings.  D'awwww  :)

String Drive 2019: Round 5

Are you tired of string quilts yet? If you are I apologize.  We are nearing the end of the 2019 string quilt drive, one more post after this one!

These are string quilts 19 through 22.  I had the most perfect cutesy backing to go on this one with more pinks and purples in the top.

This is one of the 60" quilts, it got a manly John Deere tractor backing.  The other "manly" quilt and the top of the post got a flannel backing with race cars :)

Finally, this really cool brown top was sent in nearly finished by Tina.  There were just a few blocks that needed an extra strip or two and it was ready to go. I really like the brown and red together.

I was able to put together an awesome backing for it, too, with the color scheme in this donated bird fabric.

So that's the last of the strings for a while, 22 string quilts done this year so far! Looking forward to something new next weekend ;)

do. Good Stitches

No big finishes this week, but I do have a few blocks I finally finished for the NURTURE circle of do. Good Stitches.

Based on how long they took me to finish they merit a Friday post! I also dropped off 22 more quilts at the hospital this past week :)

Over here being smothered by kitty love.

String Drive 2019: Round 4

More string quilts from the Jan/Feb Covered in Love block drive!  The latest block drive just launched, so if you want to get involved read to the bottom of this post for details.

These first two quilts were expertly assembled from donated blocks and quilted by Tammy.  She added blue thin blue sashing to the second one and it's amazing how much it changes it!

The next 3 were assembled and quilted by me.  I'm steadily making my way through all of this year's string donations :)

Although the majority of the quilts are 60"x72", to best use the number of blocks I had it worked out to have three 60" square quilts.

Love it when I can find a fun backing like these birds to go with a scrappy quilt. I especially liked the color scheme of the birds.

These five bring the total of string quilts so far to 18, and there's at least 9 left.

Thank you all for your donations and support! I should be making another quilt drop off next week to bring some more quilty comfort to the hospital.

For your weekend dose of cat, a flashback photo of  baby Sundae and Fudge wrestling :)

Sept-Oct CiL Block Drive

Hello quilters, and welcome to the Fall 2019 Covered in Love block drive! For anyone who is newer around here, CiL runs block drives every 2 months to make quilts that be given to families in the hospital grieving the loss of a loved one.

For September/October we're making these bright and cheerful split nine patch blocks based on a tutorial from Jenny in my Nurture circle group. Anyone can participate in this drive and you can make as few or as many blocks as you like. Just follow the tutorial below and get them in the mail by the end of October. Email CoveredinLoveTx@gmail.com for the mailing address.

This tutorial makes (2) 12.5" blocks at a time. It's a great block for using up smaller pieces of fabric and scraps. Start by cutting:
  • (3) 5" yellow squares
  • (3) 5" red squares
  • (6) 4.5" low volume (mostly white/light) squares
  • (6) 4.5" "cool" colored (blue/purple/green) squares

Mark and diagonal line in pencil on the back of the yellow squares. Match each yellow square right sides together with a red square and sew 1/4" to both sides of the line. Then cut apart on the pencil line and press. Trim to 4.5".

Arrange the half square triangle blocks and other squares as shown into 9 patches, keeping the reds toward the low volume side and yellows toward the cool colors.   Sew together into a completed 9 patch and press.

(Edited to Add: View some finished quilts here)

That's it, simple block! It's essentially a giant half square triangle so there are infinite ways to arrange the blocks into quilts. Thanks to all of you who consistently participate in block drives! This is a major way that Covered in Love gets the quilts that we distribute in the hospital. Over 500 quilts have been given to mourning families in the past 4 years thanks to your support :)
