Friday Finishes

Happy Friday, quilters! Got some good quilts to show you this week. This beauty is a top made by Christine and quilted by Linda.

The pattern is "String Theory" by Sharon Tucker of Grass Roots Quilt Studio. Christine found the perfect backing and binding to send with it.

This next top also came from Christine and was sent out to Sundance Quilting to be finished. 

Sundance did this pretty feathered Baptist fan design that really lets this scrap quilt shine.

Next up, two quilts that were quilted by my old circle-mate from do. Good Stitches, Jenny!

This bright quilt was actually made by my old Good Stitches circle. Lots of fun fabrics and great colors.

And lastly, a top sent on by Pam C. and quilted by Jenny on her long arm. This is a nice large quilt and I love the soft, sweet colors.

The weather has turned wonderfully cool here and the kitties and I are enjoying our porch. I hope Fall is coming where you are, too!

Finished Quilts

Covered in Love hit a BIG milestone this week you guys.  One Thousand quilts delivered to the hospitals! This belongs to all to you who have contributed to support CiL over the years since 2015 when I started with just a handful of quilts. Congratulations to all of you and a big pat on the back!

Quilts that arrive already finished and require only a label from me are my favorite kind, I admit.  There's nothing like a delivery of a box that is light for its size!

These first two quilts were made by the NURTURE circle of do. Good Stitches and quilted by Jenny S on her long arm.  

Unfortunately these may be the last two quilts of that quilting circle, with many of the senior members having to retire due to life events.  It's bittersweet, but that circle ran strong for many years and I know there are plenty of other sewing bees.

Debbie sent in this card trick quilt along with a big box of novelty yardage suitable for quilt backings.

The novelty fabrics will make cute backings, especially for things like the string quilt blocks we just made. 

The last donor in this post is Tina C, who has been involved with CiL for a long, long time. She recently sent in a couple of huge quilts. 

I especially loved the concept of this quilt with the Grandma's Squares in floral fabrics. There is one to represent each state flower of the 50 United States! 

I wrote that onto the label so the future family can enjoy trying to spot them all. 

This very large quilt had a sad story, a wedding that was planned but didn't happen.  Although we don't prefer extremely large quilts, we do accept them, and Tina wanted to send it off for a new life and a new purpose.

The feather quilting is stunning and really compliments the patterns in the blue fabrics.

I was recently talking to a doctor with the Palliative Care group at work. She expressed how much the quilts have meant to patients and families she has worked with in the past and what a meaningful gesture it is to those who need them.

Paraphrasing a bit, she said something like "I can't think of any one thing that you could do that would make such a huge impact. Like, if you wanted to do something to help, that's it."

It was meaningful to hear from someone who is so often right in the middle of these end-of-life situations about the genuine impact our quilts make and how much they are appreciated.

Last of the 2021 Strings (and Friends)

Happy Friday once again, quilt-y friends! At long last I have photos of that last quilts from the 2021 block drive. 

If you remember, the 2021 drive was the one where you all made string blocks that were foundation pieced directly onto the batting. 

With another block drive wrap up comes another map:

At the same time, I wanted to do a round-up of some more string quilts that have been completed.

I really liked this floral quilting design with the leaves and little circles of peas or seeds.

Julie W. made this top of string foundation pieced onto batting in the style of the 2021 drive.  I "quilted" it, but all I really did was add a backing and loosely stipple it on since the quilting was really already done.

Lots of fin colors and patterns in these fabrics.

In the past few months I've tried to organize my stash of leftover blocks. Pam D. helped out by assembling and quilting these into a quilt on her longarm. These are leftovers from the 2020 String Drive.

Christy G. had also sent in some string tops. I quilted this small, bright quilt during a flurry of activity last month.

This string top, also by Christy G., is made of shirtings scraps from mens dress shirts. This one was also sent to Linda and she quilted it on her longarm.

Shirting quilts are some of my very favorites and some of the most popular with families at the hospital, for obvious reason. 

Lastly, this string top was paper pieced by members of the NURTURE circle of do good stitches.  (It was exactly the wrong size to make it difficult to photograph).

Briawna assembled the top and I quilted it.  It was tempting to use rainbow binding, but I thought black would help frame it. 

I found the perfect backing fabric to go with the wild top! 

So there we go, ten string quilts ready to go! I hope you're having a good week, make time to treat yourself.  Fudge got some pretty new toenails!

Cool Colors, Hot Summer

It's still hot here, just barely starting to cool down. It's a real tease, feeling the whiff of cool air in the early morning before it heats up for the day!  I have two quilts this week in a cool color palette.  This first one is a do. Good Stitches NURTURE circle quilt from a few years ago.  

Everyone made about (8) 1" wide strips joined into a panel and these were joined into the quilt top by Briawna. Ultimately life happened and the top didn't get quilted, so Pam was kind enough to finish that step.  This would be a great use of scrap strings; 1.5" is one of the sizes I cut my leftover strings to, which is what this is made with.  But I think it would be a real bear to tackle as an individual instead of a group!

This quilt came from the Sunshine Guild, who have started to support CiL.  The top was made by Peggy, quilted by Beth, and bound and mailed by Carol.  Thank you ladies, it's lovely!

I've got my annual tie-dye bug again.  I made these shirts for the sons of a friend of mine.
