Scrappy Susannah Wrap-up

I love these "family photo" shoots at the end of a block drive.  The "Scrappy Susannah" quilts from the Fall block drive are all done.

Thirteen beautiful, cozy scrap quilts all ready to go up to the hospital for Covered in Love.   In fact, most of these went with the latest drop off on Wednesday.  We're now up to 285 quilts given!

About half the blocks from this drive got an on-point setting, which I talked about here.  I know I've said it before, but I love how these on-point quilts came out!  The quilts measure 68"sq and use 32 blocks, compared to the regular setting which measures 60"x72" and uses 30 blocks.

Volunteer quilters were a huge help with these.  Kathy did 4 of them and Meloney did 2.  Many of the backings were provided by Sandra.

We're especially always in need of "manly" quilts at the hospital so these will be perfect to fill that need.

Covered in Love continues to grow and I am so appreciative of all the donations and help I receive. The patients and families of East Texas have been blessed by your efforts.

With every drive the map is getting more colored in!  56 quilters from 28 states (and Canada) made 391 blocks for 13 quilts.  THANK YOU!

More Scrappy Susanah Quilts

Brrrr! This week Texas got snow and ice and the whole state pretty much shut down. It sure is pretty, but it sure is cold.

I have been spending my time in the nice warm house getting started on school work and finishing quilts.  Today I have 4 more Scrappy Susannah quilts from the Fall block drive.  This brings us up to 8 quilts so far from that drive for Covered in Love!

All 4 of these were assembled and quilted by me.  Toward the end of piecing the tops I decided to try some with sashing for something different.

I really like how the light colored sashing with cornerstones looks from a distance.  It's amazing how the sashing fabric can make one quilt look so minimalist and the other look so busy!

Susannah in the Fall, Part I

The first four Scrappy Susannah block quilts from Covered in Love's Sept/Oct block drive are done!

This block drive used a tutorial by Andy at A Bright Corner in a Fall color scheme and you all made it CiL's biggest block drive to date, both in number of quilters and blocks sent in.  I'm anticipating 13 finished quilts, so that would be our biggest set of quilts from a drive as well!

These first two were pieced and quilted by Kathy C., who I am fortunate enough to know in person!
She did a nice diagonal grid on both. I think the diagonal really sets off the design.  These finished at 60"x72" and Kathy found the perfect fall-colored binding in her stash and they are so cozy and perfect.

I worked a shift the other day and one of the house supervisors saw me and came over to talk about the quilts. She said on a night shift recently an ICU nurse called her and asked her to open the chaplain's office and get a quilt out for a dying patient.  Later she came by to check on the patient and family and said it looked very nice and was touching. I love hearing stories like that, it makes my heart smile :)

She asked the usual questions like, Do you make all the quilts? Who helps you? You don't know them in person? and Why do they want to make quilts for us?  It's hard to explain the internet quilting community to someone who hasn't experienced it! All I can say is, I have a lot of help, and they are awesome!

These next two quilts were pieced by me and quilted by Meloney from South Texas on her longarm. She did a pretty leaf design on the first on and a stipple-spiral on the second.

I ended up setting several of the quilts from this drive on point using this method. These quilts finish at something like 69" square and I love the look it creates.

There will be plenty more of these quilts to come, thanks to so many of you who participated in this block drive! I love this color scheme and I can't wait to get more of these cuddly quilts finished.

You know the hotel commercial "I've Been Everywhere" ?  That's what I feel like lately.  I've been traveling for my clinicals for school and my machine's on the road with me. 

I'm steadily chipping away at this rather impressive stack of scrappy susannah blocks you all sent in.  This isn't even all of them! I think we're going to have about a dozen quilts from this block drive.  The Nov/Dec block drive launched a week ago if you want to join in sewing for Covered in Love :)

New Favorite Way to Make On-Point Settings {Sew Some Love}

Welcome to the Sew Some Love linkup!  Please link-up any post about a project you're sewing for charity.

As I've begun sewing together the Scrappy Susannah blocks I wanted to try a different setting. This technique makes on-point settings SOOO much easier. I saw it here on Summer's Instagram.  Summer was making a rectangular quilt, whereas I made a square one.  First sew together a 4x8 top and then cut along the blue lines.

Flip those triangles over, sew them together, and then sew them to the larger triangle to make the other half of the quilt. Since you do end up with bias edges on the outside I sewed stay-stitching along what would become the outside edges before cutting apart the triangles. With 12" blocks this top finishes at about 68" square. What do you think? Does anyone know the original source for this technique?

Yesterday was the first day of cool weather here that actually felt like Fall! Susannah in the Fall {Block Drive}

Time flies, and some how just like that it's time for another Covered in Love block drive! There was a wonderful response to the July/August star blocks, so I hope you will all like this block as much.  I thought that with it getting toward Fall we would do a simple scrappy block in Fall colors.

This block is called "Scrappy Susannah" and you can find the tutorial HERE on "A Bright Corner".  Our color scheme will be different from hers, but otherwise that tutorial is correct.

 Please select scrappy colors in the "Fall" color family. Think dark reds, browns, oranges, and golden yellows.  For the background (white in the tutorial) choose an off white or natural fabric, prints and scrappy are ok.  For an example of a previous block drive that used Fall colors you can see the "leaves" blocks from 2015.

Covered in Love makes quilts to give to patients who are dying in the hospital which their families can keep.  At this time we have delivered over 220 quilts, thanks to so many quilters who have joined in!

I know a lot of you are old hats at these blocks drives, but there have also been several new quilters joining in the past few months! Basically, anyone can participate in these block drives and you can make as few or as many blocks as you like. If you participate this month that doesn't mean you're "signed up" for next month.
