Scrappy Log Cabins

Awhile back I made another attempt to get my string box under control. Previously I've gone on string quilt binges, like the one two years ago that resulted in these four quilts: one two three four.  Every time I knock the strings back down so I can close the box they slowly creep back until they're spilling out everywhere again.

This time I cut strings down to 2.5" widths for binding and 1.5" widths for making string blocks.  First up with the narrower strings is this wild, scrappy log cabin with the strings built up around charm square centers.

The quilt got a bright red back, orange (scrap) binding, and a medium sized stipple to hold it all together.

I'm really tickled with how this scrap quilt came together! It will be going toward Covered in Love to provide comfort to a family who has lost a loved one.  CiL has a block drive going from now until the end of the year making Hot and Cold Flip Corner blocks if you want to participate. Check out the drive post for more info.

Design Wall

Are you tired of seeing the same thing on my design wall? 'Cause I sure am.  Fortunately, the string log cabins have moved on toward the quilting stage and the last of the disappearing 9s are ready to become a top.

You can just see the top of my stack of string blocks from October's Covered in Love block drive there at the bottom left of the picture. They are continuing to come in!  There's still plenty of time if anyone wants to join in with this month's block drive to support CiL :)

I also recently sewed up my blocks for my do. Good Stitches circle. Louise has us doing a fun flying geese design.

I'll get the last D9 top sewn later. Right now I'm about to get binding on the freshly quilted scrappy log cabin.  Happy sewing ;)

Strings

On the design wall this week, more of the string log cabins I showed you last week.  These sure are fun to make!

Scrap Situation

I'm still assembling and quilting CiL quilts, but I needed a kind of mindless project to work on in between.  It started off with sorting my over flowing strings bin, trimming anything I could to 2.5" to make binding for upcoming quilts.

Then I started trimming the smaller strings to 1.5" wide...

...and next thing you know I'm making scrappy log cabin blocks.  For centers I'm using a donated charm pack of marbled fabrics.  The blocks end up 12.5" (they should be 13" but my seams must be a little fat) and I need 24 of them plus 6 end cap blocks to make a quilt.  Maybe this will put a dent in my strings bin? It could happen.

Here's Rory, the height of dignity, helping me put together a disappearing 9 patch top.
