Some of the strips in progress |
When I do QAYG (quilt as you go) like this I press the seams open and top stitch them down so the batting doesn't get too bulky. I thought you might be interested in seeing what one of these looks like from the back before I basted the backing on.
Of course little miss had to get in on the action. But you can see how the seams are open so they lay flat.
For final quilting I ran six or seven straight lines of quilting across the whole thing to hold the backing in place. (With this type of QAYG each strip is already individually quilted to the batting, but not to the backing.)

I like the colour scheme you have used in this quilt. This is a design I have always wanted to do, but didn't think about it as a QAYG. Great idea, especially for using up scraps of batting left over from other projects. Thanks for the tip .
ReplyDeleteLove the scrappy ideas. I've never tried QAYG. I know there are lots of tutorials for this, but it's nice to see part of the process. I guess I've always been afraid the batting would somehow get stuck in the feed dogs. :-/
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tip of top stitching the seams down. Love the colors you used in your quilt.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing with Oh Scrap! Top stitching down those seams is a great idea. Your quilt is lovely.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kat! I just got wind of your charity drive(s) from Dee Dee. Sorry I am too busy this month to commit to making some string blocks. However, I have quite a few tops with backs set aside. Would you be willing (or know someone) to quilt them if I send with batting?
ReplyDeleteBTW, I like your idea of string piecing directly on batting. What a time-saver!
i need to start several from different shapes of scraps because i am getting covered up with them
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea to stitch the seams down! This is such a great scrap quilt :)
