Christmas in July-ish

August! How is it possible that another year is passing so fast? Christmas will be here before we know it.

These four quilts are the last from my UFO finishing bonanza in the late Spring/early Summer.  Sherry M sent in this awesome churn-dash top with the vintage pickup trucks and trees.

This top was definitely a little older, made with some vintage fabrics and turtles were lovingly hand appliqued.  Kathy sent it in on behalf of her mother, Theresa. It came out absolutely adorable after quilting!

Louise J made this top and I found the perfect backing, already the right size, in my stash. I feel like it's a stack and whack design but I'm not sure what the original block would have been?

Edit: Carol E. was able to identify this quilt as Double Sliced Up from a pattern book for layer cakes called Another Slice.

Finally, Amy A. sent in this top that looks like a variation on a scrappy Irish chain. Thank you ladies!

I had a wonderful, relaxing trip to Santa Fe last week. Met this funny looking guy.

Covered in Love is a 501(c)(3) charity that donates quilts to patients dying in the hospital, over 800 so far! The July/August drive is running now, check out the main post HERE if you want to get involved.

  1. The quilt by Amy A. appears to be made of rows of alternating squares and four-patches. I love its scrappiness. I want to try making one. Perhaps 2.5" for the squares in the four-patches. Then the neutral squares could be 4.5".

Thanks for all the inspiration that your blog provides for my own charity sewing. I need to send you some blocks as a thank-you.

  3. Wow! More beauties to add to your quilts to take to the hospital. I'm really drawn to Louise J's quilt today. I would love to know that pattern. I think my favorite today is Theresa's turtle quilt. Your quilting on it is perfect. Looks like they have just hatched and are headed from the sandy beach to the water.
I do believe you found a handsome man to spend some time with in Santa Fe. I would say he's ready for a haircut. :)

  5. I have a little book with 4 patterns for layer cakes. The one Louise J. made is on the cover. I have been meaning to make it for years. The book is called Another Slice and is put out by Creek Side Stitches.

  6. Louise J’s quilt is a Disappearing 4-Patch, but the original 4-patch is made from HSTs, not squares. The HSTs are set in the same dark-light pattern as the old-time Broken Dishes block, with two diagonally opposite darks pointing in to the center, the other two pointing out. Dot

  9. Lots of fun quilts today. I particularly like the turtles. So your new friend? Was he drawn with chalk or actually scratched on the rock? A current guy or maybe a really old antique? Thanks for this little laugh.
